Creating an Online Quiz Assessment
Published on: 2026-01-04 by Edufide
The Online Quiz assessment type allows you to create digital-first exams where students answer questions directly in their browser. With automatic grading, AI-powered essay evaluation, built-in exam monitoring, and full Moodle question compatibility, Online Quiz is a powerful solution for both formative assessments and high-stakes exams.
🌟 Key Features
- Automatic Grading: Multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and STACK questions are graded instantly.
- AI Essay Grading: Use AI with custom rubrics to grade essay responses automatically.
- Exam Monitoring: Record student camera and screen activity for academic integrity.
- Moodle Compatible: Import questions directly from Moodle XML or MBZ backup files.
- Flexible Timing: Set time limits, open/close windows, and automatic submission rules.
- LMS Integration: Grades sync automatically back to your learning management system.
Creating the Assessment
To start, you need to select the Online Quiz type from your assessment dashboard. The process takes just a few clicks and you’ll be ready to configure your quiz in seconds.
Navigate to the Assessments dashboard from your LMS activity or Assign2 homepage.
Click on the Online Quiz card to select this assessment type.
Enter a descriptive name for your quiz (e.g., “Midterm Exam” or “Chapter 5 Review”) and click Create.
đź’ˇ Tip: Choose a clear, descriptive name that students will recognize. This name appears in their quiz list and on the quiz page.
After creation, you’ll be taken directly to the Quiz Editor where you can configure all settings and add questions. Your quiz starts as a draft—students cannot access it until you add questions and the open date arrives.
Configuring Quiz Settings
The Quiz Settings panel gives you complete control over how your quiz behaves. Click the ⚙️ Settings button in the quiz editor to access these options. Each category allows you to fine-tune the student experience for different assessment scenarios.
Timing
Control exactly when the quiz is available and how long students have to complete it. These settings are critical for managing exam windows and ensuring fairness.
- Open the quiz: The date and time when students can begin accessing the quiz. Before this time, students see a “Quiz not yet available” message with the opening time displayed.
- Close the quiz: The deadline after which no new attempts can be started. Students with ongoing attempts may still submit depending on your “when time expires” setting.
- Time Limit: The maximum duration for each attempt (e.g., 60 minutes). The timer starts when the student begins their attempt and is clearly displayed throughout.
- When time expires: Choose what happens when time runs out—either Auto-submit (automatically submits whatever the student has answered, recommended for exams) or Allow grace period (gives students extra time to submit without answering new questions).
đź’ˇ Pro Tip: For high-stakes exams, set the close time at least 15-30 minutes after the expected completion time. This accounts for students who start at the last possible moment and need time to submit their work.
Grade
Configure how scores are calculated, reported, and synced back to your LMS gradebook.
- Grade category: Organize grades within your LMS gradebook by selecting the appropriate category (if your LMS supports this feature).
- Grade to pass: Set a minimum passing threshold (e.g., 50%). This affects display styling and may trigger conditional activities in some LMS platforms.
- Maximum grade: The total points possible for the quiz. Individual question marks are scaled proportionally to this value when calculating the final score.
- Attempts allowed: Number of times a student can take the quiz. Use unlimited attempts for practice quizzes or limit to 1 for formal exams.
- Grading method: When multiple attempts are allowed, choose how the final grade is calculated—Highest grade (best attempt counts), Average grade (mean of all attempts), First attempt (only the first try counts), or Last attempt (most recent attempt counts).
ℹ️ Note: Grades sync automatically to your LMS gradebook. When you grade essay questions (manually or with AI), the updated score is pushed immediately—no manual export required.
Layout
Determine how questions are presented to students. The right layout improves the exam experience and supports your monitoring goals.
- New page: Choose how many questions appear on each page—Every question (one per page, best for proctored exams), Every 2/3/5/10 questions (grouped together), or All questions on one page (entire quiz at once, good for short quizzes).
- Navigation method: Control how students move through the quiz—Free (students can jump to any question at any time) or Sequential (students must proceed in order and cannot go back).
💡 Recommendation: For exams with monitoring enabled, use “Every question” to prevent students from viewing all questions at once. This creates better navigation data and clearer monitoring footage.
Question Behavior
Fine-tune how students interact with questions during their attempt.
- Shuffle within questions: Randomize the order of answer choices within multiple choice and matching questions. This significantly reduces the effectiveness of answer-sharing between students.
- How questions behave: Choose Deferred feedback (students see all feedback only after submitting the entire quiz, recommended for exams) or Immediate feedback (students see whether they’re correct after each question, ideal for practice/learning quizzes).
Review Options
These powerful settings control what information students can see at four different stages. Configure each stage independently to balance learning feedback with exam security.
- During the attempt: What students see while answering questions (typically minimal for exams)
- Immediately after the attempt: Visible right after submission (within 2 minutes)
- Later, while the quiz is still open: Visible after the immediate period but before the quiz closes
- After the quiz is closed: Visible once the quiz deadline passes for all students
For each stage, you can independently toggle:
- The attempt: Show which answers the student selected
- Whether correct: Display checkmarks/X marks indicating right/wrong
- Marks: Show points earned per question
- Specific feedback: Show feedback attached to specific answer choices
- General feedback: Show feedback for the question as a whole
- Right answer: Reveal the correct answers
- Overall feedback: Show summary comments based on total score ranges
💡 Best Practice for Exams: Disable all review options “Immediately after” and “Later, while still open.” Only enable detailed review “After the quiz is closed” to prevent students from sharing answers with classmates who haven’t yet taken the exam.
After configuring these settings, click Save to apply them.
