This guide provides step-by-step instructions for D2L Brightspace administrators to configure the integration between Assign2 and D2L Brightspace using the LTI 1.3 standard. This integration allows students and instructors to access Assign2 assessments directly within their Brightspace courses.

Introduction

The LTI 1.3 integration allows Assign2 to be embedded seamlessly within D2L Brightspace courses. Once configured, instructors can add Assign2 assessments to their courses, and students can access and submit their work without leaving the Brightspace environment.

This integration supports automatic grade passback, single sign-on, and maintains a secure connection between the two systems.

Prerequisites

Before beginning the integration, ensure you have the following:

Administrator Access

  • D2L Brightspace Administrator account with permissions to manage LTI integrations
  • Access to the Manage Extensibility settings

Assign2 Configuration Details

Before you begin, you will need the following from the Edufide support team:

  • Redirect URI: The authentication endpoint URL for the LTI integration.
  • OpenID Connect Login URL: The LTI 1.3 login endpoint URL.
  • Target Link URI (Launch URL): The endpoint URL for launching the Assign2 LTI tool.

Note: Throughout this guide, use the exact URLs provided by Edufide support for your institution.

Creating the External Learning Tool

A Brightspace administrator must first register Assign2 as an External Learning Tool within the institution’s Brightspace instance.

Step 1: Navigate to LTI Advantage Settings

Log into D2L Brightspace as an Administrator.

Click the Admin Tools (gear icon) in the top right corner.

3.

Under Organization Related, select Manage Extensibility.

4.

Click LTI Advantage, then select Register Tool.

5.

Select Standard as the registration type.

Step 2: Configure Tool Settings

In the External Learning Tool Settings dialog, enter the following details:

Basic Information

  • Enabled: Toggle ON
  • Name: Assign2 (or your preferred name)
  • Description: Assign2 is a comprehensive assessment management platform that facilitates the creation, delivery, and grading of online assessments.
  • Domain: [Your provided domain from Edufide]

URLs Configuration

  • Redirect URIs: [Your provided Redirect URI from Edufide]

  • OpenID Connect Login URL: [Your provided OpenID Connect Login URL from Edufide]

  • Target Link URI: [Your provided Target Link URI (Launch URL) from Edufide]

  • Keyset URL: Leave blank

  • Extensions: Leave blank

Additional Settings

  • Roles: Check Send Institution Role
  • Substitution Parameters: Leave blank (unless using custom user matching - see User Matching section)
  • Custom Parameters: Leave blank

Click Register to save the tool configuration.

A pop-up will display the Client ID. Copy this value and save it securely - you will need to provide it to Edufide support.

Click View Deployments to proceed to the next step.

Creating the Deployment

The deployment configuration determines how the tool behaves within Brightspace and which organizational units have access to it.

Click New Deployment.

In the Deployment Settings dialog, enter the following details:

Basic Settings

  • Enabled: Toggle ON
  • Auto Migrate Links: Toggle OFF
  • Tool: Select Assign2 LTI 1.3 Integration from the dropdown
  • Name: Assign2 LTI 1.3 Deployment
  • Description: Assign2 is a comprehensive assessment management platform that facilitates the creation, delivery, and grading of online assessments.
  • Extensions: Leave blank

Security Settings

  • Anonymous: Leave unchecked
  • Org Unit Information: Check this option
  • User Information: Check this option and keep all sub-fields checked

    • This allows Assign2 to receive student names, email addresses, and identification
  • Link Information: Check this option and keep all sub-fields checked
  • Classlist including users not known to this deployment: Leave unchecked

Configuration Settings

  • Open as External Resource: Check this option
  • Grades created by LTI will be included in Final Grade: Leave unchecked
  • Auto Create Grade Items: Leave unchecked
  • Substitution Parameters: Leave blank
  • Custom Parameters: Leave blank

Availability Settings

  • Make tool available to: Click Add Org Units, find your Brightspace organization, select This org unit and all descendants, then click Add

    • This makes Assign2 available to all courses in your institution

Click Create Deployment to save the configuration.

A pop-up will display the Deployment ID. Copy this value and save it - you will need to provide it to Edufide support.

Click View Links to proceed to the next step.

Testing the Integration

After completing the configuration, it’s important to verify that the integration is working correctly.

Provide Configuration to Edufide

Before testing, send the following information to Edufide support:

  • Client ID (from Step 7 of Creating the External Learning Tool)
  • Deployment ID (from Step 4 of Creating the Deployment)
  • Brightspace Instance URL (your institution’s Brightspace domain)
  • User Matching Method (Email, Org Defined ID, or Username)

Edufide support will complete the configuration on the Assign2 side and confirm when the integration is ready for testing.

Test from Course Navigation

1.

Navigate to a test course in Brightspace.

2.

Click on the Assign2 link in the course navigation (if you added it in the previous section).

3.

You should be redirected to the Assign2 interface without needing to log in separately.

Test as External Tool Activity

1.

Create a new activity in a Brightspace course.

2.

Select External Learning Tools as the activity type.

3.

Find and select Assign2 from the list of available tools.

4.

Save and publish the activity.

5.

Click on the activity link to launch Assign2.

Verify Grade Passback

To test that grades are passing back correctly from Assign2 to Brightspace:

  • Create a test assessment in Assign2
  • Have a test student complete and submit the assessment
  • Grade the submission in Assign2
  • Check the Brightspace gradebook to confirm the grade appears correctly

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues during testing:

  • Authentication errors: Verify that all URLs are correct and match the information provided by Edufide

  • User not found: Check that the user matching method is configured correctly on both sides

  • Tool not launching: Ensure the deployment is enabled and available to the correct organizational units

  • Grades not passing back: Verify that grade passback is enabled in both Brightspace and Assign2
